SS: Just search "GIMP _____ Brushes" on Google, and there'll be a link to download whatever you find.
SS: Then you can just copy them into the brushes folder. (C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\brushes)
    SS: Try that out.

Does anyone have any brushes or pattern fills that they highly recommend getting?

SS: I'd definitely get fire brushes and cloud brushes.
SS: I also have lightning and moon brushes, but that's really more of an option.
SS: Though I've heard rain/waterfall brushes are useful.

What about specific brushpacks that you recommend getting? Like, where did you download the brushes that you have?

SS: If you mean make an image take up a whole picture, just use the scale tool.
SS: If it's a sprite, you can set the interpolation to "none" so it doesn't blur it.
